Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art, A Snail-Shell Ramp to the Art.

Located in the heart of Tehran on Kargar Street, adjacent to Laleh Park, in a 5000 m2 area, Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art is the one for art aficionados. Like any other good museums, one can spend half an hour for all of the objects or just muse on any of the artistic works for much many more minutes. Here, as the sayings go, the latter is more probable!

Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art is considered to have the most valuable collections of Western Modern Art outside Europe and the United States. It is said that there is approximately £2.5 billion worth of modern art held at the museum. The building itself can be regarded as an example of contemporary art, in a style of an underground version of New York Frank Lloyd Wright’s Guggenheim Museum.

Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art’s opening was a blessing for art exhibitions and a permanent place for artistic and cultural events. The museum contains international and national collections, consisting of post-impressionist, modern and contemporary paintings and sculptures, as well as collections of 20th century photography, prints and contemporary architectural drawings.

The Museum owes a lot to the efforts and caring of Queen Farah Diba to be built and also the artifacts to be collected. She chose her cousin, Kamran Diba, as the main architect. The construction of the place started in 1969 and the museum inaugurated in 1977, just two years before the 1979 revolution.

The building of the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art is a concrete modernist building which according to its architect has employed many elements from traditional Persian architecture of the cities such as Yazd or Kashan. The façade and the architecture of the museum itself is impressive and beside what wonders inside the museum, you will encounter some astonishing modern sculptures in the surrounding area. Sculptures by artists such as Ernst, Giacometti, Magritte and Moore.

Inside Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art, there is a spiraling walkway, which leads you down from the street level to the nine major galleries and some large and small exhibition spaces.

In this museum you can behold an impressive collection of works by Van Gogh, Picasso, Salvador Dali, Matisse, Miró, Bacon, Pollock, Monet, Munch, Moore and Warhol, among many others. But they are not always on display, since there are sometimes other interesting temporary exhibitions or events like films and performance art. It is a good idea to check the website of the museum, http://tmoca.com/, before going to know more about the artists, collections and events being held. Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art (and the website as well) is closed until November 2018 due to some repairs and maintenance.
